About Caribbean Rum Punch
You sit back and wonder what inspired me to make this cocktail or how did this recipe all come about. Was it a few concoctions put together to find find the perfect blend or was it a family secret recipe that is now produced and make available to everyone?
Here is the story about Caribbean Rum Punch (The movie rights are still available).
Picture a typical day on the beach! What comes to mind? A bit difficult to visualize being in the UK? Let me help you. The water is crystal clear, you can see the sun shimmering at the bottom of the ocean as the shallow sand bed all glitters gold. A perfect day to "go down the islands" (this is the term us Trinidadians use when we take our boats out (if you do not have a boat not to worry, you just sit and wait on the jetty because someone will pop by)) and head DDI (Down De Islands). Scattered off the north western coast of the island of Trinidad are several little islands where vacation homes of various friends are located.
The scene is now set! We all are on various boats as we enter a bay and notice several boats all tied up in the middle of the bay. A rum and coke in hand or your favourite beer or drink, however, as the day passes and the sun begins to set, the warm sea breeze now gets chilly! Out comes a rum shaker and to it various measurements of rum, lime, sugar is just chucked in and shaken. The shaker is then passed around as we take a shot to warm up or was it to warm up... This was the beginning.
As various limes (to 'lime' is to 'hang out' or 'to party') went by the next significant step in the creation of this drink was Christmas time where we attended various Parang (Venezuelan-influenced Christmas music) limes where there would be your traditional hops (crusty bap) and ham, chow chow (Piccalilli) and other local delights. It is normally BYOB (bring your own bottle) and for these occasions I would experiment and bring along my own version of rum punch as we listen to the music and mellow into the night.
On arriving to the UK and missing all my friends and family home, I began making my rum punch for various UK house limes. All Trinidadians love to BBQ not because the weather is good but because it is an occasion to bring friends together. In this same thinking I started BBQIng to the level we did back home. Sun or Snow the grill would be roasting and along with this would be my own home made rum punch.
3 years ago, it was mentioned that it was a taste like no other and brings a bit of the Caribbean cocktail feeling here. To me it brings all my past to life and although all my friends and family are not here, i am reliving it via my Caribbean Rum Punch and now hope to give everyone in the UK the satisfaction we have back home sipping and liming...
Today you can have your 'lil taste of Paradise and sunshine captured in every sip!
Bring any occasion to life as you celebrate, enliven a party, set the mood as you make a romantic moment memorable, or just relax and enjoy the flavour as you escape to the Caribbean.
Feel the sunshine on your body, hear the tumbling waves on the sandy beaches and be caressed by the warm Caribbean breeze.
Caribbean Rum Punch is your taste of the Caribbean, in a bottle.
